Preserved with a brilliant silver-plated finish and smooth, finely crafted handles, this 6-person set is a sophisticated display of late-Victorian British silversmithing, perfect for formal dining or fine antique cutlery collections.
Detailed History
Founded in Sheffield, England, by Joseph Mappin in 1810, Mappin Brothers grew into one of Great Britain’s premier luxury cutlery and silver manufacturers, earning prestigious Royal Warrants during the Victorian era. By the late 19th century, they established high-end retail showrooms on London’s Regent Street and London Bridge. During the Victorian and Edwardian periods, formal dining etiquette reached its peak, giving rise to specialized flatware for every course. Fish sets became essential luxury table items, as sterling silver and high-grade silver plate were non-reactive, preserving the pure flavor of fish. In 1902, Mappin Brothers amalgamated with Mappin & Webb, making original "Mappin Bros London" hallmarked sets from the ca. 1890–1900 period highly collectible historical treasures.
