This extraordinarily rare double bit axe features a deeply embossed logo of a Cayuga Indian Chief, making it a standout showpiece of early 20th-century American edge-tool manufacturing. Designed with a symmetrical double-bit profile, one edge was ground thin for clean chopping while the opposite bit was kept thicker for limbing and working near knotty wood or roots. Mounted on a gorgeous, vintage American hickory handle with rich grain and age-earned patina, the head boasts crisp relief details in the chief portrait, making it a prized crown jewel for axe collectors and trade art enthusiasts.
Detailed History
Embossed axes represent the golden age of American hardware marketing, flourishing from the late 1800s through the 1930s. Premium manufacturers—such as Kelly Axe & Tool Co., Warren Axe & Tool, and Fayette R. Plumb—began casting and stamping elaborate embossed pictorial logos onto their top-tier axe lines to distinguish their quality from cheaper competitors. The "Cayuga" pattern pays homage to the native Cayuga Nation, one of the original five tribes of the historic Iroquois Confederacy in upstate New York. Because these intricate raised-logo dies wore down quickly and required high production costs, embossed axes like the Cayuga Chief were produced in limited quantities, making surviving examples in crisp condition exceptionally rare today.
