This fine antique European goosewing broad axe features the sought-after "Ox Head" (Ochsenkopf) maker's touchmark stamped directly into the blade. Engineered specifically for hand-hewing round logs into square timber, this single-bevel broad axe showcases the sweeping, asymmetric "goosewing" profile prized by traditional carpenters and millwrights.
Forged Head & Touchmark: Hand-hammered carbon steel construction with an asymmetrical sweeping blade face, pronounced upper beard, and dropped lower spur. Stamped clearly on the cheek with the classic Ochsenkopf "Ox Head" hallmark. Exhibits an authentic dark charcoal steel patina, fine forging texture, and light surface character.
Bevel & Offset: Single-bevel cutting edge paired with a side-offset eye, allowing a timber framer to shave smooth, flat beam faces without catching their fingers or knuckles on the wood.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. The metal remains sound with a smooth, sharp cutting profile, clean touchmark, and no structural cracks, weld failures, or major edge chips.
History
Originating in German-speaking regions of Central Europe as early as the 16th century, the "goosewing" broad axe (Gänseflügel) was considered the pinnacle of hand-hewing axe design. Its distinctive sweeping wing shape distributed weight evenly across a wide cutting edge, allowing timber framers and shipwrights to execute clean, razor-smooth passes along timber beams.
The Ochsenkopf brand (translated as "Ox Head") traces its roots back to 1781 in the famed toolmaking region of Remscheid, Germany. Celebrated for their exceptional steel tempering and hammer-forging, Ochsenkopf edge tools were exported across Europe and North America throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, authentic antique Ox Head goosewing axes are among the most iconic and highly collected timber-framing artifacts in the world.
