• The "Pancake" Pattern: Popularized in the early 1800s before major industrial drop-forging standardized regional designs, the "pancake" profile earned its nickname from its rounded, flattened cheeks and broad, sweeping double bits. This extra mass behind the cutting edges provided maximum momentum and wedge-action to push wood chips out of deep felling notches.  

   

• Early 19th-Century Fire-Weld Construction: Forged prior to modern crucible steel manufacturing, early double bit axes were hand-hammered from wrought iron, wrapped around a steel pin to form the eye, and fire-welded at the forge. High-carbon steel bits were inserted into each side to form durable, sharpenable cutting edges while allowing the central body to absorb shock without fracturing.
