An extraordinary piece of 19th-century Americana, this original "Eagle & Eaglets" cast-iron mechanical bank retains its vibrant factory paint. Designed by Charles M. Henn and produced by the world-renowned J. & E. Stevens Company, the scene depicts a mother eagle perched on a rocky outcrop guarding her nest. Operating the snake-shaped lever on the reverse causes the mother eagle to bow forward with her wings spreading wide, dropping a coin from her beak into the nest while her chicks rise up to be fed. With crisp casting detail and strong paint coverage across the eagles, nest, and base, it stands as a premier specimen of Victorian mechanical toy engineering.

• Design Patent & Production: Designed by Charles M. Henn of Chicago and patented on January 23, 1883, the bank was manufactured in Cromwell, Connecticut, by the J. & E. Stevens Company—the undisputed pioneer in American cast-iron mechanical coin banks.  

• Victorian Mechanical Innovation: Created during the peak era of mechanical banks, these interactive savings devices were marketed to teach children the virtues of thrift. Upon triggering the mechanism, an internal spring-and-lever linkage translates the movement, bringing the lifelike movement of the feeding eagle to life. Original models often included an internal bellows that produced a subtle "chirping" sound as the coin fell into the coin vault below.  

• Paint & Collector Authenticity: Produced in several colorways (most commonly featuring yellow, gray, or olive base coats with gold, brown, and dark gray accenting on the birds), intact original paint adds significant collector value.
