This extraordinary 19th-century American meat cleaver was hand-forged by the renowned Beatty family of edge-tool makers. Stamped "W. BEATTY & SON / MEDIA, PA / 1806" alongside their famous early eagle trade logo, this piece represents one of the most iconic and highly collected marks in early American cutlery history. Built with a thick, heavy-duty spine, a wide sweeping high-carbon steel blade, and a full-tang frame with riveted hardwood handle scales, this cleaver displays exceptional balance and hand-hammered steel character. An essential centerpiece for high-level edge-tool collectors, American agricultural historians, and early industrial tool enthusiasts.
Detailed History
The Beatty family toolmaking dynasty began when William Beatty established his forge in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, in 1806. The year "1806" was proudly included in many of their forged stamps to signify the company's founding date rather than the exact year of manufacture. Following their early operations in Philadelphia and Chester, the family established major works in Media, Pennsylvania. The "W. Beatty & Son" name, paired with the Media, PA location and the struck American Eagle graphic stamp, was used through the mid-to-late 19th century. Renowned across the country for their superior edge-holding ability and rugged construction, Beatty cleavers were favored by commercial butchers and packinghouse workers during the westward expansion of North America. Surviving specimens with clear, deep eagle stamps and intact Media, PA markings remain among the most celebrated treasures in American tool collecting.
