Pair of Vintage Asian Cast Bronze Dragon Head Bookends – Mounted on Black Veined Marble Bases

This striking pair of heavy bronze bookends features intensely detailed Asian dragon busts mounted on solid black marble pedestals. Designed with dramatic expression, each dragon head is cast with open jaws, prominent fangs, flowing whiskers, textured scales, and expressive eyes.

• Bronze Craftsmanship: Cast in solid bronze with a deep dark brown patina that highlights the high-relief scale textures, facial features, and open mouths.

• Bases: Each bronze sculpture is securely mounted atop a heavy block of natural polished black marble, featuring subtle white veining that contrasts beautifully with the dark bronze.

• Condition: Excellent condition. The bronze castings show sharp details with a clean patina, and the marble bases are solid with smooth faces and crisp edges.

History

In East Asian mythology and decorative art—particularly Chinese and Japanese traditions—the dragon (Long or Ryu) is a revered symbol of power, strength, protection, and good fortune. During the late 19th and throughout the 20th century, European and American decorative artists frequently incorporated Asian dragon motifs into luxury library accessories, study decor, and functional desk sets.

Pairing heavy cast metal sculptures with solid black marble became a popular aesthetic choice for high-end bookends, providing both the functional weight needed to support heavy volumes and a sophisticated, timeless display presentation for executive desks and bookshelves.
