Product Details

This authentic World War I-era military hatchet has been meticulously restored by craftsman Mike Law, combining historical preservation with master-level craftsmanship.

  • Head: Constructed from drop-forged high-carbon steel, the head features a clean, well-defined bit and a heavy hammer poll. The restored finish preserves original forging marks, casting lines, and maker's marks while removing decades of severe pitting and corrosion. It is hand-sharpened to a razor edge and sealed with a protective gun-blue or oiled antique patina finish.

  • Handle (Hickory): Fitted with a custom-turned American hickory handle, hand-shaped to mirror the ergonomic profiles used in early 20th-century field equipment. The wood is hand-rubbed with multiple coats of boiled linseed oil for a smooth, moisture-resistant finish that highlights the natural grain.

  • Fit & Assembly: Hand-wedged using traditional wooden and steel wedges, ensuring a tight, reliable seat suitable for display or field use.

Historical Overview

During World War I (1914–1918), trench hatchets and hand axes were essential standard-issue tools for entrenching units, artillery crews, and infantrymen on both sides of the conflict.

  • Primary Use: Soldiers relied on these compact hatchets for clearing brush, establishing trench lines, cutting wire, building wooden fortification supports, and preparing firewood in harsh, mud-choked conditions.

  • Design & Utility: Designed to be lightweight yet durable enough to sustain high-impact use, these hatchets were worn on equipment belts or attached to field packs.

  • Legacy: Surviving original pieces are rare in good condition due to severe exposure to wet trench environments. Restorations like this one honor the utilitarian heritage of Great War military gear, bringing functional historical art back to life.
