History

Introduced by Western Electric in 1976 to celebrate the U.S. Bicentennial and expand AT&T's Design Line phone series, the Mickey Mouse phone was one of the first officially licensed character telephones sold to consumers. Prior to the mid-1970s, customers were required to rent standard black or beige telephones directly from the Bell System. The introduction of the Design Line allowed homeowners to purchase decorative, novelty phone housings for the first time while Western Electric provided the internal mechanical components.

The push-button version rapidly became a pop-culture staple, appearing in suburban bedrooms and living rooms throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. Today, original Western Electric Mickey Mouse phones are widely collected by Disney enthusiasts, retro decor decorators, and vintage technology collectors.
