A unique, vintage tool combining iconic American axe history with custom craftsmanship. This piece originated as an original circa-1930 Kelly Axe & Tool Co. Black Raven cruiser double bit axe. Decades ago, one bit was modified and reshaped into a functional picaroon hook, transforming a classic logging axe into a specialized timber-handling tool.
Head Finish: Deeply cleaned and restored by craftsman Mike Law, featuring hand-applied gold leaf highlighting to elevate the embossed "Black Raven" logo and decorative detailing.
Haft: Fitted with a custom 28” Adirondack handle crafted by Whiskey River Trading. Made from premium straight-grain American hickory, providing exceptional balance, comfortable ergonomics, and secure seating.
Condition: Excellent restored condition. High-relief embossing remains clear and prominent, accentuated by the gold leaf accent. The head is securely hung with precise alignment.
Kelly Axe & Tool Co. Era: The "Black Raven" line was produced by Kelly Axe during the golden age of American hand tools (notably throughout the 1920s and 1930s before production fully shifted under True Temper). Renowned for high-carbon steel quality and elaborate deeply-etched head graphics, the Black Raven remains one of the most sought-after collector axes in American history.
The Cruiser & Picaroon Conversion: Originally manufactured as a lightweight cruiser double bit—traditionally used by timber cruisers and foresters marking trails or scaling timber—this head was historically re-purposed by a woodsman who converted one side into a picaroon beak. Picaroons were essential in logging for dragging, lifting, and shifting heavy logs without bending over.
Modern Restoration: Masterfully brought back to life by Mike Law, preserving the historic modification while highlighting the original 1930s embossed artwork with gold leafing.
