A magnificent specimen of classic Scandinavian axe-making, this heavy 4.5 lb Säter Banko head features the highly prized Tasmanian ("Tassie") pattern. Forged in Sweden from legendary Swedish high-carbon steel, the head showcases a thick poll, wide bevels, and a broad, deep-cutting bit engineered for felling dense hardwoods. Bearing the iconic stamped Säter Banko crest and weight markings, this head exhibits outstanding temper and geometry—a dream piece for heritage axe restorers, timber sports competitors, and serious forestry collectors.
Detailed History & Craftsmanship
The Säter Banko Legacy: Founded in 1894 in Dalarna, Sweden, the Säter axe factory (Säter Yxfabrik) was world-renowned alongside Gränsfors Bruk and Hults Bruk for producing some of the finest Swedish steel edge tools. The "Banko" brand stamp denoted their premium line, famous for flawless heat treatment, deep edge holding, and incredible toughness.
The Tassie (Tasmanian) Pattern: Originating in the dense hardwood forests of Australia and New Zealand, the Tassie pattern became the global gold standard for heavy felling axes. Scandinavian foundries like Säter exported large quantities of these specific heads to Australia, North America, and globally during the 20th century to meet demand for heavy-duty timber cutting tools.
Swedish Steel & Heat Treatment: Forged using clean, Swedish high-carbon steel, Säter Banko heads were oil-tempered to achieve an exceptionally resilient edge that resists chipping even when cutting through frozen or extra-hard timber. The head's thick, wedge-like cheek geometry ensures efficient chip clearance with every swing.
